The New Zealand Institute of Intelligence Professionals Internship Programme

Are you interested in helping keep New Zealand safe, learning about intelligence work, and improving your analytical and communication skills?

Each year, the Institute offers internships to selected students throughout the country. Successful applicants will be paired with a mentor throughout their term who will guide them during the internship. Interns will be required to assist with organising events, undertake administrative tasks on behalf of the Institute  and will be requested to provide a student viewpoint on Institute activities. This is a great opportunity to connect with practitioners from a variety of agencies in the Intelligence Community, as well as gain valuable experience and understanding of organisational management. Although mentors will likely be based in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, we welcome applicants from across Aotearoa.

How to apply

The internships run for 12 months starting each January, with the application window closing this year on 16 November. Each year when the application window opens it will be advertised in our news section, and will be mailed out to all our subscribers. We will also advertise the opportunity on our LinkedIn account. To apply, please send your CV to internships@nziip.org.nz

What You Can Expect

This is an unpaid, part-time opportunity designed to fit around your studies. The time commitment is flexible, but generally consists of two meetings or events a month with a variety of tasks in between. Selection normally gets advertised in November each year, with the successful applicants starting their internship the following January. Intership terms last for one year.

As an intern, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Organise and write minutes for NZIIP Board meetings;
  • Support NZIIP regional events;
  • Work with Board members to support their portfolios;
  • Assist in delivering the Institute’s Annual Conference and Annual Awards Night
  • Carry out other tasks as agreed to by the interns and the Board.
